Three League One Clubs after Wednesday Fullback

The League One trio of Barnsley, Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic are reportedly after Sheffield Wednesday full back, Pol Valentin.

The Spaniard is set to leave the Owls upon the expiry of his contract but hopes to remain in England.

Valentin has been a mainstay in the Wednesday team for most of the last two seasons, his ability to play in either fullback position, or as wingback has kept teams interested.

Whilst Championship interest is few and far between, the likes of Barnsley, Bolton and Wigan remain keen on the player’s signature.

The 28-year-old began his senior career in his native Catalonia for Figueres. After bouncing around clubs in the region, Valentin had a spell with Valencia’s B team which opened him to a bigger market.

Following his short spell at Valencia, the defender made the step up and joined Madrid based side Fuenlabrada in the La Liga 2.

Following three seasons in Spain’s second division, Valentin left Sporting Gijon to join Wednesday in the Championship.

After making 40 appearances in his first campaign in England before following it up with 37 appearances this season before injury cut his time in South Yorkshire short.

Whilst the Spaniard would have liked to remain at Wednesday, his commitment to remain in England in unnerved.

Valentin has a lot to offer as an attacking fullback. Pace and power are two of his strong factors, alongside his dribbling ability. The players ability to take on opposition players and cross early make him ideal to teams who either play with wingers, or who utilise the overlap with wingers, a category that Bolton and Barnsley fit into.

Where the 28-year-old often struggles is in transitional defence, sometimes finding himself out of position as well as being quite weak in aerial duels.

Valentin may have played two seasons in the Championship but looks set to drop down a division and one of the first signings in League One.
