Stevenage have had a season which not many would have predicted last year, with the Boro sitting in eight place, just one point off the playoff places, with games in hand on the teams above.
This has had the fans dreaming of a Championship berth next year and chanting “Tottenham away ole ole” during the one-nil win over Burton Albion.
Stevenage have made the playoffs in League One before back in 2012 where they lost to Sheffield United in the semi finals, but was close in the 2022/23 season where they fell just short in ninth.
Today I am taking a look at Stevenage’s last 12 games, where they are most likely to take points, what will be their strengths and weaknesses and whether the dream of Boro fans could become true later this year.
Stevenage start the run in with a Home game against Leyton Orient on March 14 which was orgianlly supposed to be played on January 4 but was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
Quickly following that on March 14, they face Wimbledon at home, before a long Tuesday night trip to Plymouth Argyle on March 17.
The Boro end March with two massive games against playoff rivals Reading at home on March 21 and away to promotion contenders Bolton Wanderers on March 28.
April will begin with the annual easter double header with two relegation-threatened sides facing Alex Revell’s side as Stevenage will visit Rotherham on Good Friday whilst Blackpool will come to Broadhall Way on Easter Monday.
Then back-to-back games against Promotion contenders follow as the Boro goes to Valley Parade to face Bradford City on April 11, then Stevenage return home to face Lincoln City on April 18.
The final three games will see Stevenage host Barnsley on April 21 , which was originally scheduled for September and then February, but due to international call-ups and a waterlogged pitch, this game is being played late in the season.
Finally, Stevenage will travel to Doncaster Rovers on April 25 before the final game will be against Wigan Athletic on May 2 where they will be hoping to be in contention for those playoff places.
This season Stevenage have been unbelievable at Broadhall Way this season with only one defeat so far being against second place Cardiff City only Bolton Wanderers have had the same losses at home in the league.
Stevenage this season have been very good defensively which has been the case over the past couple of seasons.
Filip Marschall has deservedly got the plaudits with 12 clean sheets only Geroge Wickens of Lincoln City can say he has more.
Another big part of Stevenage’s defence is their captain Carl Piergianni, who has been sensational, especially in the air, where he has been head and shoulders over the rest in duels.
Before the win over Burton, Stevenage had lost six on the bounce away from home, and had only won two on their travels since September. If Stevenage are to be able to get into the top six, that is something that needs to be corrected.
Stevenage are the wildcard in this playoff race with teams that are experienced in this race all around them, but I think they will be able to just sneak in to those playoff places, based off their home form and in the playoffs anything could happen, so could we be seeing Stevenage return to Wembley for the first since 2010?
