Bristol City announced that forward Nahki Wells would not be returning to the club as his contract ends this month. In five-and-a-half years, the now 35-year-old made 237 appearances, scoring 48 times.
With the experience of Wells now on offer, where in the EFL could the Bermudan end up?
Preston North End
The only EFL Championship name on this list is Preston North End.
Paul Heckingbottomâs PNE are in need of attacking reinforcements after losing Emil Riis and Sam Greenwood. Wells would provide a versatile option, that also adds some much needed experience to a young squad.
The forward has been deployed up top and out wide at Bristol City, whilst occasionally dropping into attacking midfield.
With Heckingbottom utilising two forwards and high midfield, Wells could provide a different option form the bench and additional goals, with the player getting 10 goals last season.
Wells could be a solid stop gap as Preston hope to step out of a relegation battle and back to being a stable EFL Championship team. Only sticking point, Wells used to play for rivals Burnley.
Huddersfield Town
A team spending big this summer is Huddersfield Town, could a return to West Yorkshire be on the cards for Wells?
The Terriers are making a big push to get out of EFL League One this season and have already pulled in two talents from the EFL Championship in Marcus Harness and Ryan Ledson.
In the second half of last season, Huddersfield fell off, dropping out of the playoffs and into mid-table obscurity. Bringing in the experience of Wells could help set up the side for a better run at going up.
Goals have been a problem for this side for some time, Dion Charles and Joe Taylor failed to get fully firing after their January moves. The Bermudan forward can provide some stability up top, netting when others donât.
This move doesnât just make sense squad wise but also personally. Wells made 153 appearances for the Terriers between 2014 and 2017, scoring 49 goals.
There have been some links taking the 35-year-old back to Bradford City, but I think Huddersfield is the better West Yorkshire club that is suited to the player this time round.
Reading
Off the pitch, Reading had a year that changed by the day. At one point they looked set for extinction, only to be saved at the final hour, now looking to the light at the end of the tunnel.
On the pitch, the plucky Royals gave it a strong go at making the playoffs, falling just short as the season came to an end. Noel Huntâs men will be hoping to go one better this year but will require some strong reinforcements.
Wells could be the perfect player to not only show Readingâs ambition for the season ahead but one that fits the system and adds strong experience to a young front line.
The 35-year-old could slot into Huntâs frontline in any position and help this team get over the line like it wants to.
The majority of Readingâs goals came from midfield, Nahki Wells could not only provide goals, but guidance for those around him. The player could be a real game changer for the Royals.
