EXCLUSIVE: Vimal Yoganathan Attracts Championship Interest

Interest in Vimal Yoganathan is intensifying across the Championship, with The Lower Tiers learning that Wrexham, Sheffield United, Charlton Athletic, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County are all monitoring the Barnsley midfielder’s rapid rise. After making 33 League One appearances in a breakthrough campaign, the 20‑year‑old has become one of the division’s most intriguing young talents.

The Early Journey of Vimal Yoganathan: From North Wales to the EFL

Yoganathan’s footballing story began far from the professional spotlight. Growing up in the quiet village of Trelawnyd, he first played locally with Connah’s Quay Nomads before a move to Prestatyn Town. His potential was spotted remarkably early — Liverpool scouts identified him at six, and he joined their development group soon after. By eight, he was officially part of the Reds’ academy setup, even spending matchdays as a ball boy at Anfield during major fixtures.

After several years on Merseyside, Yoganathan transitioned to Barnsley’s youth ranks, joining the under‑16s and quickly establishing himself. He played a central role in the club’s U18 title win in 2023, featuring in almost every match. His senior debut arrived later that year in an EFL Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers, a milestone that also made him the first player of Tamil heritage to appear in a professional English league match. His first senior goals followed in 2024, scoring twice against Manchester United U21s in the EFL Trophy.

Loan to Oldham: A Turning Point for Vimal Yoganathan

With senior opportunities limited early in his Barnsley career, Yoganathan sought regular football and joined Oldham Athletic on loan — a move he now describes as essential to his development.

Reflecting on that period, he explained:

“I knew breaking into the first team straight away would be difficult. I had one league start and a couple of cup games, but I needed consistent minutes. Going to Oldham gave me that. Playing men’s football every week really pushed me on.”

He added that he would encourage other young players to take similar opportunities:

“It helped me massively. You learn quickly when you’re playing for points every weekend.”

Conor Hourihane’s Trust and Barnsley Breakthrough

Returning to Oakwell last summer, Yoganathan impressed immediately in pre‑season — particularly in a strong showing at York — catching the attention of new head coach Conor Hourihane. That performance proved pivotal.

“I wasn’t sure what my role would be this season,” he admitted. “But the gaffer saw something in me during pre‑season, especially when I played a bit deeper. From then on he’s backed me, and that’s given me real confidence.”

Yoganathan says Hourihane’s willingness to trust young players has been transformative:

He’s not afraid to give young lads a chance. There’s a stigma that managers don’t trust youth, but he’s been brilliant with us. It makes a huge difference when your manager genuinely believes in what you can do.”

Championship Clubs Watching Closely as Stock Rises

With his maturity, versatility and growing influence in midfield, it’s no surprise that several Championship clubs are tracking his progress. Whether Barnsley can keep hold of him beyond this season remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Vimal Yoganathan has become one of the most exciting young midfielders in the EFL — and his trajectory is only heading upward.
