Watford finished mid-table in the EFL Championship last season, coming 14th with 57 points. Now, with a new season inevitable, City will be looking to improve and push on up the table in the upcoming campaign.
Ahead of their opening fixture against Charlton Athletic on the 9th of August, I sat down with Watford fan Liam Brenton (@Liambrentxn on X) to talk all things Hornets in a Watford interview.
Before we start, I would like to thank Liam for taking part in this Watford Interview. His responses were informative and aim to give you an insight into Watford as a club currently.
The Watford Interview
Q1. Watford Finished 14th Last Season, But, How Would You Summarize The Season?
“Overall, we did better than everyone expected us to last season, we were in the Play-off challenge before the turn of the year; however, injuries sort of ruined that charge in the end, resulting in us dropping down the table and being last in the form table since January.”
Q2. What Was Your Favourite Moment Of Last Season?
“Favourite moment of last season for me had to be Derby day Victory Vs Luton at Vicarage Road, a brilliant day taking our revenge against our rivals, there was so many, including Sheffield Wednesday away, but this one stood out to me more than any.”
Q3. How Would You Rate Watford’s Transfer Window Out Of Ten?
“Overall, at the minute our transfer window I would rate 7/10, better than recent transfer windows we have already signed the priority of a new striker signing two, and some strong defensive and midfield options.”
Q4. Who Has Been Watford’s Best Signing So Far?
“So far I would have to say Hector Kyprianou, we have been after him for a while now and have finally managed to bring him to the Vic, he stood out to me a lot in that Peterborough side, and for me also stood out in the whole of League One and has definitely the potential to get us to the highest level.”
Q5. What Area Of The Squad Needs Improving The Most And Why?
“Definitely a Right Back, we looked quite vulnerable down that right-hand side last season, Ngakia is ok going forward, however, I feel we need a more experienced player who is more defensively solid.”
Q6. Are Watford Prepared For The 2025-26 Season?
“Yes, with the signings we’ve made, I definitely think we have what it takes to challenge for promotion. However, I do think we could do with another central defender to boost our chances, and also if players like Chakvetadze, Baah, and Louza stay and continue to be influential, we can compete with the big teams.”
Q7. Which Game Are You Looking Forward To The Most?
“There are many Games on the calendar that I am looking forward to but the one that stands out to me normally would be Derby day however that isn’t happening this season but this season it would have to be Leicester (A) on Boxing day festive football always brings excitement and maybe we can bring 3 points back home at Christmas.”
Q8. Is Paulo Pezzolano The Right Manager For Watford?
“Paulo, for me, looks promising however, we all had the backing of Cleverley before Pozzo pulled the plug; however, he has a good track record with promotions but hasn’t worked out in the bigger leagues. If we keep behind him and support him, I think he can do well in WD18.”
Q9. Who Is Watford’s Best Player Currently?
“Best Player is an obvious one for me, Imran Louza stands out all above the rest, was undefeatable in the midfield last season, scored some crucial goals and many good assists, and if he carries on his form, I believe he could drive us to promotion.”
Q10. Can You Give Me Your Prediction For How Watford Will Do Next Season?
“For me, I believe 10th would be a good finish for us this season, an improvement on last and hopefully giving our best shot at promotion however, I think we may lack the cutting edge towards the end of the season to win promotion or even just a play-off spot.”
