WBA and Birmingham Interested in Liverpool Defender

West Midlands pair, West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City are both interested in Liverpool defender Nat Phillips, with the player set to leave Anfield this summer.

The 28-year-old has been with Liverpool since leaving boyhood club Bolton Wanderers in 2016.

Other than filling in at CB for the Reds in 2021, Phillips has spent most of his career out on loan.

After two loan spells in Germany with VFB Stuttgart, the defender was launched into the Liverpool first team following an injury crisis in the backline. The player would play 17 times that season, netting one goal in a team that often partnered him with either Virgil van Dijk or Rhys Williams.

As Liverpool returned to full strength, Phillips was back in the loan market. In 2021-22, the defender was part of the AFC Bournemouth side that secured second place in the Championship and a return to the topflight.

After a brief spell back in the first team picture on Merseyside, the player spent 2023-24 at Celtic and Cardiff City.

2024-25 has been Phillips most complete season to date, spending the campaign on loan at Derby County. The defender was integral as the Rams secured Championship survival at the first attempt, playing 33 times in the league, keeping five clean sheets and having four goal contributions across the season.

As things stands, West Brom are favourites to land the 28-year-old with the club having long standing interest that is matched by new boss Ryan Mason.

The Baggies currently only have three first team central defenders under contract and believe the player can add strong depth as they look for a promotion push.

Albion face competition to secure Phillips’s signature, with cross-city rivals, Birmingham, also after the player.

After setting the points record in League One last season, the Blues are looking to add some Championship experience to their rank and have the money to pay for it.

Derby County are said to still have interest in the player but look likely to be priced out by the tow midlands big boys.
