Oldham Atheltic boss Mickey Mellon praises new signings following successful January window at Boundary Park

Oldham Athletic

Oldham Athletic boss Mickey Mellon has admitted he is delighted with the business the club did in the January transfer window.

The New Signings At Oldham Athletic

One of the players signed was former Bradford City man Calum Kavanagh and Mellon has been excited by how the Irishman has started his career with the Latics.

Kavanagh played 70 times in all competitions whilst in West Yorkshire. During his two year stay, he managed 28 goal contributions.

Oldham also signed Mellon’s son Michael on loan from Burnley, whilst also temporarily acquiring the services of Kane Taylor from Aston Villa and Fabio Jalo from Barnsley.

Mellon’s Quotes

“I’m very excited and pleased and I think it shows the type of way that we want to go forward with a team,” said Mellon speaking the the Oldham Times

“When we look back to how late in the season we started to recruit because we didn’t know what league we were going to be in”

“It was going to be a ‘let’s see how we go and see how we can improve it’ and if there were any players that could help us try to move forward we tried to recruit them.”

“But as we’ll go along and as the windows come around we want to try to bring more of the Calum Kavanagh profile type players first and foremost that we believe can come in and make an impact”

“Age isn’t important – but if we can get a 22-year-old like him that you know is only going to get better and is absolutely going to come in and hit the ground running then they’re the types of signings that you want to try and make.”

Mellon also raved about the signing of the Aston Villa loanee:

“I’m really excited about Kane Taylor, a real talent,”

“He’s had a great youth career, moved for a lot of money and been a top youth player. We wanted to see what he was up to with us and had seen that the signs were encouraging.”

“We gave him the opportunity to come on against Cambridge at a difficult time in the game and we’ve all seen definitely what he’s capable of.”

“I don’t want to put him under pressure but he looks the real deal and a terrifically talented player, so we’re really pleased with him. And he’s getting fitter all the time.”

Oldham Athletic

Oldham Athletic sit in 16th in League Two but do have a 14 point buffer to the relegation places, despite losing their last three matches.

Mellon and his players will hope they can get a victory on Saturday and fall back in love with their form on Valentine’s Day as they host Fleetwood Town at Boundary Park.
