What Could Kyle Bartley Do After Retirement?

West Brom defender Kyle Bartley has announced his retirement from professional football that sees an end to his 16-year playing career.

The decision comes after the 34-year-old sustained a knee injury last season, and despite operating on it, he has been unable to recover fully.

Kyle Bartley had joined his team-mates in Austria for pre-season but had not trained with his colleagues or competed in any friendlies.

He said: “I am fortunate to have represented some outstanding clubs during my career and Albion holds a particularly special place in my heart.

“I’ll continue to support Ryan Mason and the lads and don’t plan on being a stranger at The Hawthorns – a special place that I will always be fond of.”

A Successful 16-Year Playing Career For Kyle Bartley

Throughout his professional career, Bartley amassed a total of 407 senior appearances, representing clubs such as Swansea City, Leeds United, Birmingham City, Rangers, Sheffield United, and West Bromwich Albion.

He first came through the ranks at Bolton and Arsenal before spending consecutive seasons on loan at Sheffield United to gain experience in senior football.

A loan spell across the border during the 2010/11 campaign saw the then 19-year-old pick up the first major silverware of his career, winning the Scottish Premiership with Rangers.

Kyle Bartley found a permanent home in Wales when he made the switch to Swansea in a £1 million deal in the summer of 2012. That season, Swansea went on to win the League Cup, with Bartley featuring in the early rounds of the competition.

Further temporary moves to Birmingham and Leeds followed, but the Stockport-born defender eventually settled at West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2018.

He played a leading role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League in just his second campaign and would go on to make 232 appearances for Albion, scoring 15 goals.

The veteran was the longest-serving senior player on the club’s books after spending seven years in the West Midlands.

Divided Opinion Of Fans But A Respectful Servant

The vice-captain of West Brom was a player who often divided opinion among fans.

Many believed his career at Albion was over after it hit an all-time low in 2022 against Birmingham. A disastrous home defeat to their rivals — under then-manager Steve Bruce — saw him hauled off to jeers and ironic cheers.

However, a rejuvenated Bartley turned his career around under the guidance of new manager Carlos Corberán, just months after the Blues defeat. The defender scored two goals and kept three clean sheets in his first three appearances under the Spanish tactician, quickly becoming a mainstay in the side.

Injuries later prevented him from retaining his place in the XI that season, but he went on to make 36 league appearances in the 2023/24 campaign and established himself as one of the club’s most important defensive figures.

What Now For Albion’s Backline?

The announcement comes on the eve of Albion’s new Championship season, with the Baggies set to host Blackburn at The Hawthorns tomorrow.

It leaves new boss Ryan Mason with just four senior centre-backs to choose from. An opening day victory against Blackburn Rovers should ease those fears for a short while.

Summer signing Nat Phillips, who arrived from Liverpool, is expected to start in the backline — Torbjorn Heggem was alongside him.

Star defender Torbjorn Heggem, last season’s Supporters’ Player of the Year, continues to be heavily linked with a move to Serie A side Bologna. Albion are holding out for their valuation of the Norwegian international, which is reportedly in the region of £10 million.

Youth academy graduate Caleb Taylor, 22, has returned from a successful loan spell at Wycombe and featured regularly in pre-season. Could he push up the order now?

Meanwhile, versatile U.S. international George Campbell, who joined from Montreal for £1.5 million just three weeks ago, is also in contention to earn a starting spot in Mason’s defence.

Regardless of who is chosen, the club must act swiftly in the transfer market to fill the void left by Bartley — a leading figure both on and off the pitch.
