Cardiff City have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Nathan Trott on a season-long loan from Danish club FC Copenhagen.
The 26-year-old shot stopper is the first signing the Bluebirds have made this transfer window under new manager Brian Barry-Murphy.
It has been reported that the loan does have an option to make the move permanent should the Bluebirds secure promotion back to the Championship.
The former England youth international is available for selection immediately, meaning he could make his debut for the club in their trip to Port Vale on Thursday night.
A statement from the club read; “Cardiff City FC are delighted to welcome goalkeeper Nathan Trott to the club.
Trott began his professional journey in the youth system of Spanish giants Valencia before joining West Ham United in 2016.
Standing at 6’2″, the goalkeeper gained valuable experience through loan spells with AFC Wimbledon, Nancy, and Vejle, before securing a move to FC Copenhagen in the summer of 2024.
“It’s a great move for me,” said Trott following his first visit to the Cardiff City Stadium as a City player.
“I’ve spoken with Brian on the direction he wants the Club to go in, It’s something I want to be a part of. I’m no stranger to new environments and learning new things and see this as a strength in myself.
He added, “This is a huge moment for me in my career. I’m happy to be here.”
Brian Barry-Murphy Speaks on New Signing
It has been a quiet start to the transfer window for the South Wales club in terms of arrivals, but at least three more signings are expected to follow Nathan Trott through the door.
Barry-Murphy has remained firm in his ‘quality over quantity’ approach during his first window in charge, taking time to assess the squad and place trust in the promising academy talents already emerging at the club.
Speaking on his new arrival the Irishman said, “We want to recruit absolute quality in every area of the pitch and players that can play the way we see the club playing as we move forward, and Nathan embodies all of that.”
“I’ve known and watched Nathan play for a long time. I actually managed against him while he was on loan at Wimbledon.
“He fits the mould of the player we want to attract to the Club. He is still very young; he has a high level of skill and also has real room for growth and improvement to take his game to another level and that’s the challenge we’ll put to him.
“We’ll also be looking to him to use his experience to provide leadership qualities to the squad.”
The Current Goalkeeper Situation at Cardiff City
Trott has now become one of four senior goalkeepers currently at the Welsh club with Ethan Horvath, Jack Alnwick and Matt Turner.
Turner opened the League One campaign in goal for the Bluebirds, producing a strong display in the 2-1 win including a crucial save to secure all three points for Cardiff late in the game.
Alnwick was placed on the bench by Barry-Murphy with Horvath left out of the opening day squad to face Peterborough United.
It is believed that American shot-stopper Horvath is set to leave the club this summer with interest from various parties including clubs in the Championship, MLS, Belgium and Denmark.
The arrival of Trott also casts doubt over the future of Jak Alnwick, with the 32-year-old unlikely to be content with a third-choice role after featuring regularly in recent seasons. As a result, he may look to secure a move elsewhere in search of more consistent playing time.
