Ryan Lowe’s Wigan Athletic are not done bolstering their attacking option with the club now targeting Bromley‘s 26-goal striker, Michael Cheek.
Lowe is overseeing a summer of transition at the Brick Community Stadium, after taking over from Shaun Maloney in March.
The Latics biggest targeting point has been at the top of the pitch, with the club already adding Christian Saydee and Wrexham’s poster boy, Paul Mullin. Last season Wigan scored just 40 goals and they’re not waiting around to change that statistic.
Cheek scored 26 goals in all competitions last season in what was the forwards first in the EFL. Prior to this, the 33-year-old has been a force in non-league, consistently scoring in double figures for the last 12 seasons.
Michael Cheek’s Bromley Record (League only)
Bromley Season | Division | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
2024-25 | League Two | 45 | 25 | 7 |
2023-24 | National League | 46 | 23 | 0 |
2022-23 | National League | 45 | 17 | 0 |
2021-22 | National League | 42 | 17 | 0 |
2020-21 | National League | 44 | 23 | 0 |
2019-20 | National League | 37 | 13 | 0 |
At 33, with only one EFL season under his belt, signing Cheek would be a risk but with his goalscoring record and the club only being a division above Bromley, it seems quite a healthy risk to take.
Not only could this be a match for Lowe and the Latics, but it could also provide the final big move for a player supposedly heading into the twilight of their career.
The forward provides a calculated risk, with many fans in non-league seeing him as natural striker, someone who would find goals at any level.
Cheek is under contract for 2025-26 so would require a fee to move up north but as the player has scored 132 goals in 284 games, it is understood the club would honour his request, should he decide he wants the move.
