Wigan Athletic Set To Sign Experienced Double Promotion Winner

Wigan Athletic look set to sign a free agent after he was released by Stockport County recently. The Latics are looking to add today.

Wigan Athletic are set to sign Jack Hunt on a free transfer after he was released from Stockport in January.

The right-back played 13 times for the Hatters before his short term contract ended getting one assist in the process.

Jack Hunt’s Career

Hunt started his career off at Huddersfield playing for the Yorkshire club for four years. He made 104 appearances after making loans spells to Chesterfield and Grays Athletic. Hunt won promotion with Huddersfield through the playoffs playing the full 90 minutes and extra-time in the final in 2011/12.

Hunt made his move to the Premier League in 2013, joining Crystal Palace. Although he never played a game for them with injuries playing a big part during his time in London. He was loaned out to Barnsley, Rotherham, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday.

Hunt joined Wednesday for an undisclosed fee, after a successful final loan spell. Hunt was part of the Sheffield Wednesday side that made the playoffs in the Championship but lost 1-0 to Hull in the final. The Owls reached the playoffs again next season. However, were unable to reach the promised land of the Premier League again.

After a a three year stint at Bristol City, Hunt returned to Sheffield Wednesday looking to regain their Championship status after relegation. He played 50 games in Sheffield, eventually scoring the winning goal in the playoff semi-final penalty shootout after a 4-0 turnaround at home to Peterborough United.

Hunt returned to Bristol to play for Bristol Rovers in 2023. Injury problems were constant for him. He made 45 appearances for the West Country outfit before joining Stockport County on a short term deal at the start of this season.

Hunt has played 10 times for Stockport, primarily being deployed at centre-back and right wing-back. He has only played two full games in the league, both 1-0 away losses to Reading and Huddersfield.

Wigan will look to strengthen their defence to allow them to climb clear of the League One relegation zone.
