The Birmingham City manager has been under pressure recently as the Blues’ play-off hopes fade.
Davies side has been the most in-form team in the EFL Championship recently, including a 2-1 win over flying Norwich City, their first win at Carrow Road in 24 years.
Birmingham had closed the gap to just two points behind fellow American owned and newly promoted side Wrexham in sixth place after putting together a seven-game unbeaten run in the league. However, consecutive defeats to Millwall and Middlesbrough have since widened that gap back to eight points, with 11 matches remaining.
Despite a record-breaking League One campaign last season, where Birmingham amassed 111 points, there has still been widespread debate over whether he is the right man to take Blues to the next level and meet Knighthead’s ambitious expectations.
Chris Davies’ comments following the 3–1 defeat to Middlesbrough at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park suggested that another exceptional run would be required for his side to finish in the top six.
Football League World’s Birmingham City fan pundit Jason Moore believes that Chris Davies is not the right man to progress the Blues forward as they pursue their long-term Premier League ambitions, pointing to concerns over his tactical approach.
After being questioned if Davies was the right man to take Birmingham forward, he said: “No. I don’t think he is, if I’m being honest.
“I don’t think he’s tactically good enough to ‘outcoach’ other managers in the Championship, never mind the Premier League.
“For me, he’s failed big time,” Moore said. “He’s a manager with one idea, and if it doesn’t work, he does like-for-like subs and has no idea of a ‘plan B’.”
According to EFL Analysis fans have debated over Davies’ lack of a Plan B this season specifically when some felt he was out managed against Millwall in their 3-0 defeat.
“Chris Davies, for me, is not the man for us long-term,” he explained. “Personally, I’d not be surprised to see them (the owners) pull the plug on him in the summer, because we are not getting in the play-offs this season.”
With Davies’ incredible home form, it is unlikely he will be sacked this season. However, the summer could prove decisive for the Welshman, as some fans feel he has underperformed despite receiving heavy backing in both transfer windows.
Despite the scrutiny, Davies position has consistently retained the backing of owner Tom Wagner as he looks to turn the club’s fortunes around.
