Wrexham Chase Experienced Defender

Wrexham are actively pursuing seasoned defender Jack Robinson, the Warrington born 31-year-old currently playing at Bramall Lane is at the heart of Phil Parkinson’s transfer plans, hoping to bolster his backline after falling to a late winner in cruel fashion against Southampton on the opening day of the season.

Why Robinson makes sense

Robinson, known for his versatility can play several roles along the back line, whether it be slotting in on the left or playing at the heart of a defence at centre-back. Robinson should bring some much-needed flexibility along the defensive unit, something Parkinson could utilise amid their defensive reshuffle.

With close to 160 appearances for Sheffield United and having played for clubs such as Liverpool, QPR and Nottingham Forest, Robinson carries a wealth of experience on his CV. His former manager Chris Wilder described him as “aggressive, a leader… someone who says the right things and acts the right way”. This may prove vital for Wrexham, having a player who carries premiership experience could help lead to a top half finish for the Welsh side.

Wrexham’s transfer philosophy places an emphasis on signing proven professionals who deliver an immediate impact and show championship consistency. Robinson aligns perfectly with this approach, joining the ranks of other pragmatic signings like Conor Coady, Josh Windass, and Ryan Hardie.

Status of the talks

While discussions between the Red Dragons and The Blades were progressing, the deal has been slightly hindered by the recent sale of Sheffield United centre-back, Anel Ahmedhodzic, to Feyenoord. Despite this hiccup, Wrexham remain confident of getting the deal of the Englishman over the line. Parkinson views this deal as a “bargain” target.

What could this bring to Wrexham

Robinson’s leadership and ball winning ability may bring defensive stability to Wrexham; this should be important to Parkinson after looking shaky in the first day of the season. Furthermore, his experience may prove crucial as Wrexham look to cement their place in the Championship and add fuel to the promotion push. This also signifies intent to Wrexham fans, proving the Hollywood owners are not looking to stop at the championship, and the Premier league could be the next stop.

How would Robinson fit

If Jack Robinson does complete his move to Wrexham, Phil Parkinson will almost certainly use him as a defensive cornerstone, rather than a rotational squad player.

For the majority of the time, fans should expect Robinson to play as a centre-half in a back three or a back four system. In a three back he will most likely play on the left side, being left footed he gives balance and the ability to step into midfield with the ball, which suits Wrexham’s progressive style of play. Alternatively, in a back four he should be partnered with a more physically dominant aerial defender like Ben Tozer or Conor Coady, providing pace and better distribution from the back.

He can also  be a key option in set piece routines, defensively he is strong in aerial duels, so he’d most likely mark the opposition’s target men. Offensively he can be a real threat, attacking near-post corners due to his timing and leap.

Summary

Wrexham’s pursuit for Jack Robinson, is a calculated and strategic play aimed at enhancing leadership, versatility and adding even more defensive quality following other defensive signings such as Conor Coady. If completed, it would represent another savvy addition aligned with the club’s upwards momentum. Furthermore, the transfer should paint the picture to fans that the club have intentions to spend and push on, trying to reach the summit of English football.
