Wrexham are reportedly in pole position to sign Sheffield Wednesday forward Bailey Cadamarteri.

A bid of £1m could be enough to persuade the Owls to sell the 20-year-old.

Who else wants to sign Bailey Cadamarteri?

The Red Dragons had faced competition from Millwall and Blackburn Rovers for Cadamarteri’s signature.

Rovers had reportedly bid £800,000, while Millwall bid £300,000, but neither bid was considered enough for the cash-strapped Owls.

Cadamarteri is also attracting attention from Europe.

Rapid Vienna have also entered the race to sign him, according to Sheffield Star reporter Joe Crann:

What would Bailey Cadamarteri bring to Wrexham?

The Jamaica international would be a good signing for Wrexham. He has played over 50 times in the Championship for Wednesday, so has plenty of experience.

His goal record is not exactly prolific – he has only scored seven goals for the club so far – but at 20, he has plenty of time to develop.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is a fan of Cadamarteri.

After Wrexham’s narrow 1-0 win at Hillsborough last weekend, he told the Sheffield Star: ‘Bailey is powerful, he’s strong, he makes good runs and he worked really hard for the team [Sheffield Wednesday] today.’

He played down any links to Cadamarteri, adding: ‘But not really, at this stage we’ve looked at lots of options and if we can bring in a couple of players I’ll be pleased, if we don’t I won’t be too disappointed.’

Wrexham have been looking at a number of transfer options over this window, including Sammie Szmodics, Adam Armstrong and Sidiki Cherif, although the last two have moved to different clubs.

Why do Sheffield Wednesday need to sell Cadamarteri?

Sheffield Wednesday are in dire financial straits after going into administration in October and need to sell players to try and ease their situation.

They are also staring relegation in the face.

James Bord has launched a takeover of the troubled club, but if that falls through, the club would need to sell players to cover any financial shortfall.

But losing any more players from their threadbare squad, especially a talented youngster like Cadamarteri, would hit them hard.
