Could Wrexham Be Striving For A New Leader In The Dugout?

A new leader for Wrexham could be on the horizon following a disappointing start to the EFL Championship season.

After a harsh start to life in the Championship, Wrexham have only won one of their first five, sitting in 21st. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the hierarchy of the club have been murmuring about a potential new manager to steer them to safety this campaign.

A total turn of pace compared to their prior three successive promotions has left an uneasy feeling in Ryan Reynolds’ stomach.

With £30 Million being spent on some big names, the board expect quick results and for the team to solidify themselves into the Championship. So what’s going wrong? Wrexham have scored in every game so far, the answer seems to be a leaky defence and poor shot stopping. The Red Dragons have conceded ten goals in the league, meaning a strike force is not the issue.

Possible Candidates For Wrexham:

Wrexham have a multitude of options ahead of them, especially with Sheffield United’s recent dismissal of Ruben Selles.

Links have also been made to Ex-Villa manager Steven Gerrard, (According to SportsBible) and The Wrexham Insider floats rumours surrounding Sean Dyche, becoming the newest appointment at the Racecourse.

The new leading candidate is Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. It was rumoured today that He is tipped to be very interested, despite Phil Parkinson’s press conference in which he claimed there hadn’t been any discussions surrounding his future at the club.

Gerrard’s Managerial Career

His managerial career kicked off at Rangers up in Scotland, in 2018. He led 192 games in 1228 days, winning 124, drawing 41 and losing just 27 games during his three-year Scottish stint. In his third full season, Rangers went unbeaten in the league to win the club’s first title in ten years! Gerrard was then picked up by Midlands stars Aston Villa.

At Aston Villa, Gerrard struggled with grasping life in The Premier League with fans seemingly always on edge about the appointment, and how quickly he could turn the fortune around and take the club to the very top. Gerrard lasted just under a year in Birmingham, winning just 13 games and losing 19, which showed to the board that he may have just been a one hit wonder.

Could Gerrard have a similar life in The EFL to Frank Lampard?

Lampard had a Premier League stint with Chelsea as Gerrard did with Villa.

Lampard’s Premier League stint began with a strong display, winning 44 of his 84 games in charge. He finished 4th with the club and qualified for The UEFA Champions League. Unfortunately after he returned as caretaker manager in April and May of 2023, he only won two of the eleven games he was in charge for.

After this, Lampard took a break until being appointed the manager of regular Championship regulars Coventry City. So far, Lampard has had 295 days in charge winning 20, and guiding his team to the playoffs in the 24/25 season.

Coventry were knocked out by Sunderland’s Dan Ballard heading a late winner in the playoff semi final.

Assessing this, the EFL could be the perfect fit for Gerrard, to get back on his feet and gain some managerial experience after a long lasting career.

The EFL is known for its tough battles and long away days, meaning it would not be a walk in the park at all. With a great squad, and spending £30 million in the summer Wrexham certainly have the team and players there, but it is evident that a new manager could potentially get the best out of the new signings.

Wrexham face Norwich away from home tomorrow afternoon at 3pm, which could prove decisive for Phil Parkinson, should he not manage to pick up three points. Norwich go into the game sitting nicely in 10th with seven points.

However, to Wrexham’s advantage they have a long list on injuries, setting them back with squad depth..
