Wrexham have confirmed the departure of star player Paul Mullin. The striker will now join Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2025-26 season.
The 30 year old is the third signing to join the Latics this summer following the arrivals of both Kilmarnock midfielder Fraser Murray and Portsmouth marksman Christian Saydee.
This signing is pivotal for Wigan and will add real quality to their side. Here is a report on how this move will benefit both sides and whether the signing of Paul Mullin is actually good.
Wrexham Announce Loan Move For Mullin
It was announced on Monday evening that Paul Mullin will join Wigan Athletic on a season loan. This announcement comes during a pivotal transfer window for the Latics.
Mullin was a star for the Red Dragons during their promotion winning National League and EFL League Two campaigns. During the course of these two seasons, the Englishman was able to score 62 goals. Furthermore, he was able to pick up the Red Dragon’s Player Of The Year award across three consecutive seasons.
Speaking on the move, Mullin said:
“I’m excited for the next part of my story. The Gaffer has outlined his plan for the season, and I’m hoping to take his trust into the season and make it a really successful one.
“As a player, I give absolutely everything and work as hard as I can.
“I’ve scored a lot of goals over the last few years, but more than anything, I give my absolute all for the Club that I’m playing for, and I’m going to do that again with Wigan.”
The announcement also comes following reports from elsewhere that Mullin was set to leave the club this summer.
Mullin Falling Down The Pecking Order
Since the Racecourse Ground outfit’s promotion to EFL League One for the 2023-24 season, it can be seen that Paul Mullin has fallen down the pecking order at Wrexham.
This comes due to the fact that Mullin only played 26 games during the course of the 2024-25 season. Furthermore, of these 26 games, the striker only started nine games.
As well as this, the 30 year old only played 1,153 minutes during the campaign. This is an average of 44 minutes per game. This acts as a reflection of Mullin’s decreasing involvement in the Wrexham team last season.
Furthermore, the signing of Sam Smith from Reading during this year’s January transfer window can be seen to have been a replacement for Mullin.
With the striker falling down the pecking order, a move away arguably would help to benefit him – especially in this stage of his career.
Does This Move Benefit Wrexham?
Arguably, this move does benefit Wrexham more than it hurts them. This is because of the 30 year old’s high wages which have been increasing year on year. This is due to the Racecourse Ground outfit’s continued rise up the football league.
Through loaning the striker out, the Red Dragons are able to split the Englishman’s wages. This means that some of Wrexham’s wage bill is freed up which will allow them to pursue other players. The signing of these players could be crucial if the Welsh side are to survive next season.
How Does This Move Benefit Wigan Athletic?
Currently, Wigan Athletic are looking to rebuild after a 15th place finish in EFL League One last season. Alongside this, the Latics scored the least amount of goals in the division last season with 40.
The arrival of Paul Mullin will arguably add a goal scoring threat to Ryan Lowe’s side and help them to score more goals during the 2025-26 season.
Furthermore, the signing will increase the squad depth of the Brick Community Stadium outfit. This, alongside the striker’s goal scoring attributes, will benefit the Latics in their pursuit for the play-offs next season.
A Good Signing Overall?
The loan signing of Paul Mullin adds quality, depth and a goal scoring threat to Ryan Lowe’s side. However, the effectiveness of this signing will depend on whether Wigan can bring the best out of the striker.
If they can’t, this signing could end up looking worse than it currently does now.
